What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body, innervating the lower back and all the way to the toes. Because of this, the sciatic nerve is prone to injury like inflammation, irritation, or getting pinched by the vertebrae in your lower back.

Some symptoms of sciatica include:

  • Numbness and weakness in the lower back, buttock, and feet
  • Pain that gets worse with movement or long sedentary periods
  • A feeling of 'pins and needles' in your legs, toes, and feet

Sciatica can be caused numerous ways:

  • A slipped or herniated disc that exerts pressure on a nerve root
  • Degenerative disc disease when the discs between the vertebrae wear down
  • Spinal stenosis which reduces the space shared by nerves and the spinal cord
  • Osteoarthritis in aging spines
  • Pregnancy
  • A traumatic injury to the sciatic nerve or lumbar region

How Long does Sciatica Last?

This is entirely dependent on the reason for the sciatica in the first place. Causes like pregnancy or treatable injuries cause acute sciatica, which is usually more painful, but resolves itself after a week or two of remedying the cause. Chronic sciatica, on the other hand, is normally a result of arthritis or another life-long condition, and the pain is a bit milder but still quite uncomfortable.

Good posture, supportive shoes, keeping a healthy weight and regular exercising may decrease your risk for chronic sciatica.
